President Kagame Thanks Trump Administration for Role in Rwanda-DRC Peace Deal

On July 4, 2025, as Rwanda marked the 31st Anniversary of Liberation Day, President Paul Kagame expressed gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration for helping mediate the recent peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During a special press conversation with local and international journalists, President Kagame praised the U.S. for paying attention to a regional conflict that has often been overlooked on the global stage.“I thank them [Trump’s administration] for even paying attention to the problem,” said Kagame. “They could have ignored it, like many others who focus only on places like the Middle East, Ukraine, or Iran.”

The peace agreement, signed on June 27, 2025, includes key commitments from both Rwanda and the DRC to disarm rebel groups, reduce foreign military presence, and work together toward long-term stability in the region.

President Kagame emphasized that while the U.S. helped to bring both parties to the table, implementation depends on the two nations themselves.“They won’t come and fulfill the agreement for us,” he said. “But I can assure you, Rwanda will do its part without hesitation.”

Kagame also explained that this deal is more promising than previous efforts because it includes important factors like security, politics, and the economy, areas that are often ignored in past peace talks.

He added that it would be helpful if the U.S. remained involved as a supporting partner during the implementation phase.

President Kagame also used the moment to encourage Rwandans to stay focused on national goals, reminding citizens that the country’s progress has come from within, not from foreign aid or outside forces. “Rwanda doesn’t owe its existence to anyone,” he said. “That’s why we must aim high and shape the future we want.”

The conversation served as a powerful reminder that for Rwanda, liberation is not just about remembering the past, it is about continuing the journey with purpose, unity, and determination.
