Musanze: Journalism students convene for 3-Day Workshop

Rwanda Media Program (RMP) in collaboration with Fojo Media Institute has launched an intensive three-day workshop for aspiring journalists from different Rwandan University schools. The intensive training program, taking place in Musanze District, tends to equip the future media professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in today’s dynamic media landscape.

Participants from the East African University of Rwanda (EAUR), Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK), Mount Kenya University (MKU), and the University of Rwanda (UR) will explore different topics including Kinyarwanda writing rules (Amategeko y’imyandikire y’ikinyarwanda), news writing, social media usage, multimedia storytelling, pitching a story and interviewing techniques.

“This initiative represents a significant step in nurturing the next generation of Rwandan journalists,” said Mahoro Claudine the workshop coordinator, highlighting the importance of maintaining high standards in local language journalism while adapting to the evolving media landscape.

This intensive training program represents a significant investment in Rwanda’s media future, preparing the next generation of journalists to meet the evolving demands of the profession while maintaining strong connections to local language and cultural context.

Participants of the training say they are eager to learn from the various mentors. “Gaining digital skills, capitalizing and resourcing my journalistic skills through social media are some of the main things I am excited to learn about”, says Kagibwami Bill a student from ICK.

This intensive training is expected to not only enhance participants’ technical abilities but also cultivate a strong sense of journalistic ethics and social responsibility, empowering them to excel in their academic and professional endeavors.
