The women’s basketball team of East Africa University Rwanda (EAUR WBBC) made a dominant start to the Varsity League quarterfinals on Saturday, winning both of their opening Group A matches in Musanze District in emphatic fashion.

EAUR WBBC played twice on the opening day of Group A competition, beating RICA 104-15 and UR Remera 70-34.

Speaking after the matches, captain Umuhoza Nadine credited teamwork, unity, and following the coach’s instructions as the main factors behind the team’s strong performances.

“The secret behind our success is teamwork and listening to what the coach tells us during the game,” she said.

She also revealed that the team’s main ambition is to win the tournament while inspiring more girls to take up basketball.

“Our goal is to win the trophy and encourage more girls to love basketball,” she added.

Star player Uwiringiyimana Ange played a crucial role in EAUR WBBC’s victories, scoring 39 points against RICA and 41 points against UR Remera. She attributed her performances to hard work and personal commitment outside regular team training.

“There is no other secret besides working hard. Whether the coach is present or not, you must keep pushing yourself because a coach cannot teach you everything,” she said.

“The girls are improving together, especially in defense and scoring ability. That is helping us perform well,” he noted.

Coach Ishimwe also addressed their upcoming match against Kibogora Polytechnic on Sunday, acknowledging the quality within the opposing side, including several players competing in the national first division. A win on Sunday would send EAUR WBBC through to the semi-finals.
