EAUR Aims for Excellence in Sports: “Education First, Then Sports”

On January 9, 2025, East Africa University Rwanda (EAUR) unveiled its vision for sports and academics during an exclusive interview on The Kick Off Zone, a radio program hosted by EAUR. Boniface Iyamuremye, one of the officials overseeing sports activities at the university, emphasized the university’s guiding philosophy: “Education first, then sports.”

“The philosophy we uphold is simple: education first, then sports,” he explained, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to nurturing both academic and athletic excellence.

EAUR’s sports teams primarily consist of students, providing them with opportunities to develop their talents while ensuring they prioritize their education. Iyamuremye stated, “Currently, 80% of our teams are made up of students. This creates a sense of ownership and motivates them to give their best.”

He highlighted the importance of sports in shaping a well-rounded student. “We offer basketball, volleyball, and even a cultural dance troupe. These activities help students relax, explore their talents, and engage in productive activities beyond their studies.”

EAUR’s volleyball teams are setting high ambitions for the current season. “Our goal is to finish in the top four of the championship. If everything goes well, winning the title is not beyond our reach,” said Iyamuremye.

The basketball teams are also preparing for a strong season, with the women’s team receiving significant reinforcements. For the men’s team, the objective is clear: to advance to the first division.

Despite the optimism, Iyamuremye acknowledged several challenges, including financial constraints and the high cost of accessing training facilities. “One major hurdle is the lack of sufficient funds, and another is the cost of renting training grounds. However, we are optimistic that we’ll soon have our own dedicated training facilities.”

When asked about football, Iyamuremye admitted that the nature of the sport poses unique challenges. “Football requires a lot of time and dedication, similar to a professional career. Balancing this with academics is difficult, especially since students must prioritize their studies,” he explained.

EAUR’s commitment to balancing education and sports development is evident in its holistic approach. While nurturing athletic talent, the university ensures that students remain academically focused and achieve their broader goals.

The interview showcased the university’s determination to support its students in every aspect, laying the groundwork for a thriving sports culture within its academic environment.
