Christmas in Kigali: Personal Stories of Festivity and Community

As Christmas lights sparkle across Kigali, Rwanda’s capital comes alive with stories of love, reflection, and togetherness. From church gatherings to street celebrations, this special day unites people in sharing hope and joy.

On Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, we explored Kigali to uncover the unique ways its residents are celebrating the season.

At Kabuga Parish in the Anglican Church, we met Umwali Patience, a 20-year-old university student and a Christian. For Patience, Christmas is a time for deep reflection and togetherness. Although she describes herself as spiritual rather than religious, Christmas Day holds special meaning.

“It’s the one day I feel the need to connect spiritually and thank God for everything,” she says with a warm smile. After church, she spends time with her family, enjoying a hearty meal filled with laughter and stories. “We don’t just share food; we share memories and hope for the coming year,” she adds, emphasizing the simple but meaningful traditions that bring her joy.

A Busy Yet Joyful Season for Shopkeepers

In the heart of Kicukiro, Ernest Mugenzi (not his real name), a middle-aged shop owner, was surrounded by shelves stocked with everyday goods and festive decorations. Business had been steady during the Christmas season, with customers rushing in for last-minute essentials like sugar, flour, small gifts, and ornaments.

“This is the busiest time of the year for us. People want to stock up for celebrations, and that keeps us on our toes,” Ernest said. Despite the long hours, he remained cheerful, knowing the season brought an opportunity for higher sales.

When asked about his own plans, Ernest smiled. “This morning, I went to church with my family before opening the shop. After closing tonight, I plan to have a simple dinner with my family. We will exchange stories and laughter. It’s the little moments like these that make all the hard work worthwhile.” He takes pride in being part of the community’s celebrations, ensuring his customers get what they need to make their holidays special.

Festive Night in Nyamirambo

As the sun set, Nyamirambo’s car-free zone, fondly called “Mumarangi,” came alive with vibrant lights, music, and the enticing aroma of street food. Diane and her friend Patrick were among the crowd, soaking in the festive atmosphere.

“I love how this place feels during Christmas”, Diane said with a sparkle in her eye. “It’s becoming more of a tradition because now it is the third time I have come here on Christmas.

Patrick, sharing her sentiment, added, “Celebrating here with Diane makes the night special. She is one of my closest friends and she recently introduced me to this place. Now I see why”. His words highlighted the importance of companionship and shared experiences during the holiday season.

The two enjoyed brochettes from a local vendor, savoring the delicious Rwandan street food. The lively atmosphere, shared laughter, and tasty treats captured the true spirit of Christmas in Kigali.

Celebrating Safely

As the city celebrated, the Rwanda National Police worked to ensure public safety and order. Increased patrols and checkpoints monitored traffic and deterred crime. The police also reminded the public to celebrate responsibly by emphasizing the ‘Tunyweless’ campaign, which encourages citizens to avoid excessive drinking, drunk driving and serving alcohol to minors.

The community responded positively to these efforts. Streets were bustling but peaceful, and residents expressed appreciation for the sense of security. By promoting accountability, the police ensured that everyone, including visitors, could enjoy the holiday safely.

These moments of connection, joy, and responsibility remind us that the festive season in Kigali is not just about celebration, but about a community coming together to embrace hope and share goodwill.”
