Shamimu’s Journey: From Environmental Studies to Culinary Success in Dubai

The culinary profession has witnessed remarkable growth worldwide, driven by increasing awareness of healthy eating and the fast-paced lifestyles that leave many with limited time to prepare meals. While some still underestimate the significance of this profession, those actively working in the field affirm that it holds immense potential, capable of transforming lives.

One such professional is Rudasingwa Shamimu, a Rwandan chef currently working in Dubai. Despite initially pursuing a different academic path, she discovered that culinary arts offered vast opportunities and a stable, rewarding career.Reflecting on her journey, Shamimu notes how attitudes toward culinary studies have evolved over time.”In the past,

telling someone you were studying to become a chef was almost unheard of. People expected you to pursue medicine or law to secure a successful future. But today, things have changed. The job market has expanded, and the culinary profession now offers promising opportunities,” she explains.

Shamimu initially studied PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) in high school and later pursued Environmental Studies at the university level. However, she soon realized that opportunities in her field were scarce, with institutions like REMA (Rwanda Environment Management Authority) being the primary employer.

Faced with stiff competition and limited job prospects, she made a bold decision to switch to culinary arts—a move she describes as life-changing.The road to success was not without obstacles. Shamimu had to convince her family that a career in culinary arts was a viable option, something they initially struggled to accept.

However, after witnessing her progress and achievements, they eventually embraced and supported her decision.Her journey to Dubai also presented challenges, as she spent considerable time searching for a job. She actively applied for positions through social media and online job platforms before finally securing employment at a prestigious establishment.

Shamimu emphasizes the importance of due diligence for young job seekers, warning against fraudulent recruiters.”The key to success is having clear goals and being well-informed. The job market is constantly evolving, and culinary arts is one of the fields growing rapidly. It’s crucial to stay committed, acquire the right skills, and utilize available platforms like social media to explore opportunities,” she advises.

The culinary industry continues to thrive, particularly in countries with booming hospitality and tourism sectors. Yet, in Rwanda, some still perceive cooking as merely a basic skill rather than a serious profession. However, experienced chefs like Shamimu are proving that culinary arts can be both lucrative and fulfilling.

Compared to the past, attitudes toward the profession have shifted significantly. The rise of hotels, restaurants, and catering services has created countless opportunities for skilled chefs, both locally and internationally.

Many Rwandans have built successful careers in this field, securing jobs in top-tier restaurants and even establishing their own businesses.For young people passionate about pursuing a career in culinary arts, quality education is crucial. Institutions like East African University Rwanda provide professional training in culinary arts, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in the industry. These programs covering hospitality, mass communication and Journalism , and international food trends.
