Kigali’s traffic congestion, especially during rush hours, has long frustrated commuters. To address this, the Rwandan government has launched a $100 million initiative equivalent to around 140 million Rwandan Francs, to expand key roads and upgrade major intersections, including Chez Lando, Gishushu, and Kicukiro-Sonatubes. The project is part of the Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI), aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing delays.
Officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure emphasize that this initiative is crucial to making the city’s transport system more efficient. François Gihoza Mivugo, Director of Project Implementation at the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), stated that upgrades will focus on 11 major intersections, with priority given to Remera (Chez Lando), Gishushu, and Kicukiro-Sonatubes.
In addition to improving Kigali’s traffic, another initiative is underway to strengthen Rwanda’s regional connectivity with neighboring countries. This project is expected to facilitate trade, enhance economic ties, and improve transportation infrastructure beyond the capital.
the Construction is expected to be completed by 2029, generating 400 jobs; 30% of which will be reserved for women. The total budget for these infrastructure projects exceeds $360 million, funded through a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
These upgrades mark a significant step toward a more efficient and accessible transport network, benefiting both residents and businesses.
