NICE Club Rwanda Empowers Youth to Shape a Nuclear-Powered Future - EAUR Magazine

Kigali, July 9, 2025.  Under the theme ‘Nuclear Energy is Clean Energy‘, the NICE Club Rwanda hosted a dynamic and insightful meeting this Wednesday, bringing together students, young professionals, and Nuclear advocates to discuss the future of clean energy in Rwanda.

An Awareness actions, and Vision

The event, held from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, opened with a recap of the NEISA 2025 Summit, which took place in late June at the Kigali Convention Centre. During the summit, Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente stressed the need for African countries to embrace clean and innovative energy solutions especially nuclear energy to meet growing electricity demand and accelerate economic development. “Rwanda plans to grow its electricity generation capacity from 1 GW to 5 GW by 2050 through nuclear energy, aligning with the national Vision 2050,” a Nice Club speaker highlighted.

A Youth Movement for Clean Energy

The highlight of the meeting was the official presentation of NiCE Club Rwanda a youth-led initiative with a bold mission, to educate, empower, and engage young people in nuclear science, fight misinformation, and inspire a new generation of clean energy leaders.

Through workshops, guest lectures, field visit, and creative communication, the club aims to bridge the knowledge gapand prepare student and professional to actively participate in shaping Rwanda nuclear future.

Rwanda Energy Landscape Challenges and Opportunities

The presentation titled “Nuclear Energy and Rwanda” shed light on the country’s current energy status

  • Current production, about 350 MW
  • Heavy reliance on hydropower (max capacity of 250 MW by 2050)
  • No domestic fossil fuel production
  • High import costs
  • Vision 2050 goal, 5 GW installed capacity

This context reinforce the urgent need for alternative, sustainable, and high density energy sources with nuclear energy emerging as a logical and climate resilient solution.

A Platform for Thought and Leadership

During the interactive segment, participants engaged with thought good questions such as: “If you had unlimited clean energy, what would you power first?”“What challenge must Rwanda overcome to go nuclear?”, and “How would you describe Nice Club to a skeptical friend in 20 seconds?”
These conversations sparked deep reflection and highlight the curiosity, innovation, and leadership potential of Rwanda youth. To close the session, the club announced it upcoming leadership elections for key positions:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Social Media Manager

Menbers interested in running were invited to prepare a short speech for the next general meeting. A strong call was made to join the cause and help shape the future of clean energy in Rwanda.

The Nice Club Rwanda showed how active and motivated young people are about the future of energy in Rwanda. As the country works to reach its Vision 2050 goals, smart, creative, and passionate young leaders will play a key role in making nuclear energy not just a plan, but a real part of Rwanda future.
