Rwanda Launches 2024/2025 Primary Leaving Exams for Over 220,000 Pupils

On Monday, June 30, 2025, The Ministry of Education officially launched the 2024/2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), marking a significant milestone for the country’s basic education system. A total of 220,840 pupils are sitting for the exams nationwide.

The national launch was presided over by The Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana at GS Filipo Simaldone in Nyarugenge District, while Minister of State Claudette Irere, led a parallel ceremony at Sainte Ignace in Gasabo District.

The PLE is a key exam that assesses learners’ skills and prepares them for secondary education. This year, a total of 220,840 candidates are sitting the exams across 1,147 examination centers nationwide. Of these, 120,621 are girls and 100,219 are boys, reflecting Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equity in education.

The examinations will take place from June 30 to July 3, 2025, covering six subjects: Mathematics, Ikinyarwanda, English, Social and Religious Studies, and Science & Elementary Technology. More than just an academic test, the PLE reflects Rwanda’s commitment to inclusive and quality education.

The Ministry has also provided special support to candidates with disabilities, including braille, large-print materials, and exam scribes.

This launch sets the tone for a month of national assessments, with the Secondary School Examinations scheduled to follow from July 9 to 18, 2025, encompassing both O’Level and A’Level candidates across general, professional, and technical tracks.

The Ministry of Education has extended its best wishes to all candidates, and acknowledged the efforts of teachers, parents, and communities who helped prepare learners for this important milestone.
