This Sunday, June 8, 2025, Kigali will host the 20ᵗʰ edition of the Kigali International Peace Marathon, a major sporting event that goes far beyond the finish line. More than just a race, it is a vibrant celebration of peace, health, and unity. The event will take place at Amahoro Stadium under the theme “Bring the World to Kigali and Make Kigali Shine in the World,” highlighting Rwanda’s strong commitment to promoting global peace and international cooperation.
A structured, inclusive and symbolic event
Organized by the Rwanda Athletic Federation in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports (MINISPORTS), the marathon will feature three categories accessible to all. These include the full Marathon Men and Women (42.195 km) Start at 07:00 2laps of 21.1 km), the Half Marathon Men and Women 21.098 km Start at 08:20 1lap and the 10K Run for Peace Men and Women inclusive for all, including wheelchair participants and all starting will be from the Stade Amahoro, the focal point of an event designed to bring people together across sporting boundaries.
In a note to the public, the race director stressed that the event embodies peace, unity and sportsmanship, bringing together runners from all over the world in one of the cleanest and greenest environments on the planet. He also recalled that the marathon is organized under the patronage of President Paul Kagame, in collaboration with the Rwandan Athletics Federation and the Ministry of Sports. He added ‘’this event reflects Rwanda’s commitment to promoting peace and cooperation on a global scale’’.
Sport as a lever for public health
At a time when health issues are crucial, this marathon is a call to collective action for a healthy lifestyle. It encourages people to get moving, to run, to walk and to do good for their bodies and minds. The Fun Run for Peace, wich is accessible to all without a timer, it is a perfect illustration of this well-being and inclusive dimension.
Beyond the sporting competition, the Kigali International Peace Marathon embodies a commitment to sustainable peace and community development. Funds generated by the event support initiatives such as the rehabilitation of excombatants, strengthening the country social fabric
International stage
The event attracts runner from diverse backgrounds, with over 10,000 participants in 2024, representing 35 countries. This year, the marathon is aiming for the World Athletics Gold Label, a recognition that would elevate the Kigalii international peace Marathon among the world most prestigious marathon
Today, the Rwandan authority see the marathon as a strategic instrument for promoting peace, health sport and development, while enhancing Rwanda image on the international stage
