Today, on the 30th of October 2024, in Musanze District, Northern Province, continued a training of Gender Leaders Club which was on its second day. The day unfolded with mentor Felix Uwimana Hirwa leading an engaging session on the vital role of gender clubs in University schools.

During the training, the mental outlined key aspects that illustrate the importance of gender clubs in University Schools including inclusivity and diversity, awareness and education among others. He said that the clubs provide space where everyone feels safe and supported to tackle any issue related to Gender. “These clubs create a welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds, they contribute to promoting acceptance and understanding among themselves”, adding that gender clubs provide a safe space for students to share their experiences and seek support.
In regard to awareness and education, Uwimana said that the clubs serve as platforms for educating students about gender issues, fostering empathy and respect. Therefore, he encouraged the participants to build solidarity among students, showcasing how collective action can lead to positive change within the school community.
The mentor also urged participants to challenge societal norms and engage in open conversations, and encouraged them to timely report all the incidents of discrimination or harassment. “You are being empowered so that you can open up and speak out any incidence you face but also, you have to empower others and advocate for them”, he said.
As the training progressed, the participants felt inspired to implement these principles in their schools, recognizing that gender clubs could be a catalyst for transformation, fostering a culture of respect and equality among their peers.
Abeli Moses from EAUR attest that the session improved his Knowledge of Gender. “I have gained a much deeper understanding of gender issues, and I am planning to teach what I have learned in my community to foster greater awareness of Gender.”
On the other side, Ishimwe Kefa Seth from UR Huye Campus remarked: “I have learned that teamwork is crucial. A club should function like a family, supporting each other beyond just completing club activities.”
The training on Gender started on Tuesday 29th October 2024 and was attended by 20 students from various universities, including EAUR, UR Huye campus, ICK and MKU. The training aims to empower future leaders to advocate for gender equality and awareness in their community starting from University students who are members of Gender clubs.
