Professor Callixte Kabera, the Vice-Chancellor of EAUR University, confirmed in an interview with EAUR Radio that the institution has begun implementing this plan by revamping its teams and recruiting talented players to strengthen their squads.
“We establish teams with a purpose. That is why we revamped our teams, bringing in fresh talent with the aim of securing promotion to the first division,” he stated.
To achieve this goal, EAUR has added key players, including Mystere Kasongo (center, DR Congo), Kirekirere, Cyiza Ruben (UR Huye), and Kiganza (Titans), reinforcing their squad with high-quality talent.
He emphasized that this initiative aligns with EAUR’s broader vision of promoting sports as an essential part of youth development.
“You cannot nurture young people and deny them opportunities to engage in what they love. Sports, according to national policies, should benefit athletes and help them achieve their full potential,” he added.
This announcement follows EAUR Basketball Club’s impressive performance in the Heroes Cup, where they dominated Agahozo Shalom BBC with a remarkable 133-51 victory, demonstrating their ambition to advance to the top tier of Rwandan basketball.
EAUR’s commitment extends beyond basketball. The Volleyball team is also part of this initiative, reinforcing the university’s strategy to build a strong reputation in sports both locally and internationally. The institution aims to make a lasting impact by consistently developing talent and fostering a competitive sports culture.
EAUR’s recent efforts in sports development are already yielding results, as seen in their dominant performance at the Heroes Cup.
The Heroes Cup tournament, which commenced on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, was organized by the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) in collaboration with the Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders, and Decorations of Honor (CHENO). This competition features nine teams from Rwanda’s second division league, showcasing emerging talent in the sport.
The tournament format includes a group stage (three groups: A, B, and C), where teams compete for a place in the semifinals. The three group winners, along with the best-performing runner-up across all groups will also advance to the semifinals.
The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, February 1, 2025, where:
Group A winner will face the best loser
Group B winner will battle against the Group C winner
The third-place match and the final will take place on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Through its continued investment in Basketball and Volleyball, EAUR University is establishing itself as a powerhouse in Rwandan sports, fostering young talent and preparing them for greater opportunities in the national and international arena.
