Rwanda came from behind to beat Cape Verde 2–1 in Praia on Tuesday, September 29, maintaining their perfect start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Gilson Tavares scored on 40 minutes, Claude Niyomugabo equalised at 45+2, and Elie Tatou Iradukunda netted Rwanda’s winner in the 52nd minute.
The victory took Amavubi to six points from two matches and provisionally put them top of Group K, ahead of Mali’s meeting with Liberia later on Tuesday. Cape Verde remained without a point after suffering their second consecutive defeat.
Cape Verde had more possession and attempts, with match statistics showing 70 per cent of the ball and 19 shots to Rwanda’s six. Amavubi, however, made their opportunities count to secure three valuable away points.
The winning goal capped a significant week for Iradukunda. The Rayon Sports winger had been called into Stephen Constantine’s senior squad after initially being selected for the under-23 side, replacing the injured Keddy Nsanzimfura.
Rwanda had opened their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Liberia at Amahoro Stadium. Tuesday’s result strengthens their bid for a first AFCON appearance since 2004, with the top two teams in Group K qualifying for the 2027 finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
